Pleural mesothelioma

Types of Mesothelioma

There are two common types of mesothelioma: Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Pleural Mesothelioma is cancer of the Pleura, a sac that lines the lungs. The pleura is a membrane that lines the pleural cavities surrounding the lungs. When inhaled, asbestos fibers are absorbed into the pleura causing lesions and scarring. Eventually, mesothelioma forms as a result of the damage caused by the asbestos fibers.

Cancer in the abdomen caused by asbestos is known as Peritoneal Mesothelioma. The peritoneal is a sac that lines the abdomen much in the same way the pleura lines the lungs. It is believed that asbestos fibers reach the peritoneal membrane either by being swallowed or migrating from the pleura.

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma that exists, and in its malignant form is the direct result of exposure to asbestos fibres. You can get benign tumours with mesothelioma, but the malignant form is by far the most common.

This form of mesothelioma attacks the lungs and respiratory areas of the body. The cancer attacks the cells and the lining (known as the pleura) of the lungs and ribs. As with other forms of mesothelioma, the symptoms can take twenty or thirty years (sometimes longer) to present themselves following exposure to asbestos, making it impossible for people to realize that they have been affected until it is too late.
Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of thisasbestos-related cancer. This form of cancer affects the lining that surrounds the heart, and is associated with long term exposure to asbestos fibres.
